Competitive Grants Program

Each fall, the URI Foundation awards funding to full-time tenure track faculty, lecturers and full-time staff as part of its Competitive Grants program.  The purpose of the program is to support project proposals that directly benefit students through enhancements of the quality of educational, teaching and research practices and initiatives.

Over $1.5 million has been awarded to support hundreds of projects since the program’s inception in 1982.  The average grant size is $2,250.

Projects focused on interdisciplinary teaching and learning, active e-learning to promote engagement and experiential learning, as well as those with global influence or perspectives are especially encouraged.  Grants cannot be used to support faculty travel.

Funding for the grants is provided by an annual appropriation made by the Foundation Executive Board.  The funds are not derived from endowment earnings.

Proposals are considered by the University’s Grants Advisory Committee and then forwarded to the Foundation’s Competitive Grants Committee with recommendations for review and funding.

The application process for the 2011-2012 academic year will open in September. Watch this webpage for specific dates as the summer draws to an end.
