Campaign Final Reporting/Stats
The University of Rhode Island’s Making a Difference capital campaign officially ended December 31, 2010.
Thousands of URI donors dared to think big and the impact of their generosity is already evident; helping more students pay for college, attracting the most talented students and faculty members, enhancing the construction of cutting-edge learning facilities, and supporting innovative programs, initiatives and experiences that truly distinguish URI from other schools.
Our success is only as good as the commitment of our alumni and friends who donated well beyond our $100 million goal to an impressive $128 million. We honor their role in the campaign’s success, which will continue to have a transformational impact on the University community!
Here’s a look at the campaign, by the numbers:
The overall campaign goal, set at the July 2004 start (quiet “leadership” phase) of the campaign, was $100 million. At the close of the campaign, on December 31, 2010, a total of $128 million was raised. A proportionately high ratio of that figure, $104.7M, was received in cash, with $7.3M in outstanding pledges and $16.3M in planned gift commitments.
The majority of the funds raised, $49.2 million, were received as outright gifts supporting a wide variety of programs and initiatives across all colleges and areas. This sector was followed by gifts received to create or fund endowments at the University, which totaled just over $31.5 million.
The University currently has over 1,000 endowments, with a market value of approximately $99.5 million, as of December 31, 2010. Just over 300 of these endowments were created during span of the campaign. Approximately 65% of endowment gifts at URI are used to support student scholarships and fellowships, with 22% designated for program support and the remaining 13% providing support to the library, athletics, community outreach, administrative support, etc.
Nearly $10 million was raised to support new building construction, including enhancements to the new Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences building, the new Center for Ocean Science and Exploration, the new College of Pharmacy building, which is in the midst of construction, and the planned Student Athlete Development Center.
Planned gift commitments to the University topped $16 million while nearly $10 million was contributed toward supporting Athletics programs at URI. Almost $9 million was raised in annual giving through the Fund for URI, which provides flexible and immediate operating support across all of URI’s campuses in many different forms and for many different needs.
Over 32,000 donors, including alumni, friends, individuals and corporations/foundations alike, contributed to the Making a Difference campaign, with a total of 84,998 separate gifts made. More than 13,000 donors were first-time or new donors and over 15,000 donors were URI alumni.
In addition to our donors, the URI Foundation expresses its sincere thanks to the volunteer, alumni members of the Campaign Leadership Committee, including its chair, Thomas M. Ryan ’75, for their commitment and leadership in furthering the objectives of the Making a Difference campaign. For a complete list of members, click here.
