Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Donates $200,000 to Support COP

Gift will support construction of new College of Pharmacy building on Kingston Campus

Site of new pharmacyKINGSTON, R.I. – Jan. 20, 2010 - Pennsylvania based pharmaceutical company, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, has donated $200,000 to the University of Rhode Island’s College of Pharmacy. The donation will support the construction of the new, $75 million home for the College of Pharmacy, which is being built in the new science district in the northern region of the Kingston campus.  The Teva gift is part of the University’s Making a Difference campaign.

The pharmacy building construction project is supported primarily by $65 million in taxpayer approved bond financing accepted in November 2006. Remaining support for the project will come from private donations, including the recent $200,000 gift by Teva Pharmaceuticals. When completed, the five-floor, 148,000 square-foot building will be the largest academic structure on campus. Groundbreaking for the pharmacy building occurred in October of 2009.  It is situated adjacent to the new $65 million Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences building which opened in 2009.

“As the leading pharmaceutical producer in the world, Teva is a recognized and respected name throughout the pharmaceutical industry,” said Dean Ronald Jordan of the College of Pharmacy. “We are especially pleased to be associated with Teva and their support in constructing new research facilities within the building is very much appreciated. As our program heads toward the lead in academic pharmacy, we hope to grow our relationship with Teva and make them proud they have helped us with this early stage investment in our training, research and development, and service trajectory.”

“Teva is excited to contribute to the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy’s new facilities and to enable future pharmacists to excel and learn in an innovative setting,” said William Marth, Teva North America’s President and CEO. “As a company, Teva prides itself on providing access to affordable healthcare products and considers pharmacy education a lifetime investment in continuing this path.”

Dean Jordan noted that the donation will provide the company with the opportunity to name the Clinical Pharmacology Lab along with the Experiential Education Suite within the new building. He also added that Teva’s gift is among the largest corporate donations received for the new building. With this gift, the fundraising progress approaches the half way point for the building’s campaign.

Glen R. Kerkian, president of the URI Foundation, said, “We view this thoughtful decision by Teva as yet another example of the good return on public-private partnerships to Rhode Island taxpayers.  By enhancing our infrastructure, and creating world-class scientific facilities, such as the new Pharmacy building, we are generating opportunities to attract talented students and faculty as well as increasing the flow of research dollars into Rhode Island. We are truly pleased to be the beneficiaries of this significant corporate gift.”
