The 2002 Award Recipients
Eileen Tierney, winner of the Administrative
Excellence Award, is curator of the library's
Media Resource Center. Since 1985, she
has overseen the ordering, receiving,
and distributing of films, videos, and
audios used in classrooms across the campus.
Although technology is forever changing
her job description, it has never changes
Eileen's cheerful disposition. Eileen's
wealth of knowledge makes the center one
of the richest resources on campus and
certainly one of the most user-friendly.
Kim Bissonnette, winner of the
Staff Excellence Award, has been the head
athletic trainer at the University of
Rhode Island since 1991, Kim coordinates
sports medicine services for all 22 intercollegiate
sports. That means he is responsible for
the daily prevention, evaluation, and
care of injuries for more than 600 varsity
athletes each year. More than 150 professional
athletic trainers across the country owe
a debt of gratitude to Kim's internship
program and his tireless support.
Alain-Philippe Durand, winner of
the Teaching Excellence Award, has an
exuberance and passion for teaching the
French language and culture. In the three
short years he has taught at URI, Alain-Philippe
has generated a great deal of excitement
about the French major. He has established
an exchange program in Marseilles and
designed an innovative program so that
his students can chat electronically with
French authors.
Judith Swift, the recipient of
the Scholarly Excellence Award, is a professor
of theatre and communications studies.
For the past 30 years, she has dazzled
her students and her audiences everywhere
with her unique brand of pixie dust by
bringing originality and insights to all
her productions. But it isn't magic that
transforms any play she directs or pens,
it's Judith's scholarly bank of knowledge,
not only of the theater but also of literature,
history, science, and much more. Read
